Do you have a Vons? I live next door to one so I do most of my grocery shopping there. Every now and then I'll go to Ralphs or Walmart but that's only if I borrow a friend's car. They're too hard to get to by bus and they're out of my walking range. Walmart is a 6 mile round trip with a steep uphill at the end of the walk. I did it a couple of weeks ago but it was too much for me especially with carrying a bag of groceries home.
yup, there is a vons next to me that I shop at regularly

It's nice to live next to a Vons. It makes life so much easier. Unfortunately, I don't have a fast food place that I like within 2 miles of me. There's a 7-11 close by. I don't drink much coffee these days (a cup a week at the most) and today was my day to get some. I noticed that they have Big Gulps for 49 or 59 cents (can't remember which). I've never seen Big Gulps that cheap. I wish that they still had the skinny hot dogs. They weren't very good but I would always get them. I don't like the jumbo hot dogs. I might do the Del Rio tamales for $5 at Vons on Friday but they're not very good compared to home made. When I stopped driving, I lost my ability to get tamales because all of the good vendors I know about are too far away from me. There was a lady who sold tamales and she would come by our building once a week. Her tamales were so good - the best I've ever had. They were wrapped in a banana leaf and it was like Bobby Flay made them but she got a 9 to 5 job and doesn't come anymore.

Albertsons affiliates (Safeway, etc) sells a nice store brand, O Organics. Their tortilla chips are good and competitively priced. A couple years ago, they changed the packaging. When they did, the quantity was reduced from 10 oz per bag to 8.25 oz. I'm sure there are other examples but this one sprang immediately to mind since I buy them regularly and was disappointed to see the downsizing of the product.

Whoops. I think I posted this in the wrong thread. I'd better go get a nap.

how do you find estate sales?
Facebook or the nextdoor app may be a good source for your area. There used to be little freebie papers at the grocery store that would list these but those havent been in stores in a long time here.

The website estatesales dot net is the best one. There is another website estatesales dot org that does not have as many of the sales.

As I understand it, anyone can post a sale to estatesales dot net for about $100. In our area, there's usually at least one sale that is not handled by one of the bigger groups doing estate sales.

Does anyone else feel like eating out at sit down restaurants is just too expensive?
At many of them, it is, but we are lucky to have a great mexican food restaurant we love here. Entrees are mostly all under $20 each and include rice, beans, salad and tortillas. Add to that, we of course get warm chips and their homemade salsa. I should also mention they probably have the best frozen margaritas in town, but we only have one small one each. While we each get our own meal, we routinely bring home enough for us to each have another meal out of it.

I used to go to the $1.99 Taco Tuesday at Baja Fresh. It wasn't fine dinning but I loved their chicken tacos. Sadly, the special is gone now. I stuck my head in a Baja Fresh a year ago and a plain old bean and cheese burrito was $10. Nope, it's not for me anymore. There was another Mexican restaurant that I liked and they also had a $1.99 Taco Tuesday. People would be lined up around the block but it was worth the wait. Unfortunately, they closed during covid. There are a lot of Mexican restaurants by me but I haven't found a good one yet. When I lived in a different part of Los Angeles, there was one on every corner. I miss going out to eat but it's tough to do with no car and my health issues. Plus, I'm priced out at most places. I'm on a strict budget and I'm already way over it because of how much grocery prices have gone up.

I've never been to an estate sale but I have gone over to someone's house to bid on a rare book collection. Her husband passed away and she didn't want the books anymore. I ended up winning and then I had to figure out how to move the books and where to put them. He was a doctor and also a book collector. I would see him at signings but I didn't know him. I was surprised that his wife picked me. I was up against some pros and I had never done anything like this before. It was an interesting experience. It was more than 20 years ago back when the book business was booming and there were a lot of collectors.

Bryce Mitchell, a controversial UFC fighter, said that Trump shouldn't be spending taxpayer dollars to put on the UFC White House card. I agree with him but we do spend taxpayer dollars to support the US Olympic team and many of the athletes are openly critical of our country. Sean Strickland, the UFC middleweight champion, was banned from the event but he said that he's going to come anyway. Banning a fighter for his political views (Strickland is very anti-Trump and anti-Israel) isn't a good look for our 250th anniversary. There's something called free speech and you don't give up that right just because you're an idiot.

Netflix cancelled The Night Agent and The Lincoln Lawyer. Netflix comes out with 700 new shows a year but 690 of them are bad. I wonder why they cancelled two good ones.

Lincoln Lawyer is so good, I didn't know the show got cancelled
There's one more season of Lincoln Lawyer coming out and then it's cancelled.

It's wild to announce the cancelation BEFORE the new season comes out. It's like they're saying we know the new season sucks so don't bother watching.

So has Sean Strickland really been banned from the UFC's White House card and, if so, who banned him? Or is this another one of his publicity stunts like the fake feud with Khamzat Chimaev in his last fight? I find it hard to believe that Dana White would ban the middleweight champ from attending one of the biggest sporting events in history. Most people that I know see Strickland as a lunatic and the ban gives him a lot more credibility than he deserves. The MMA community can turn on a dime and Strickland is now the UFC's biggest star. We'll see if he really got banned and if the MMA community will give him a pass if it's all made up.

We have some taco places we like, but at the place we go, we get a huge plate of food.

I'm sure it does not compare, but there are at least two guys we see pretty regularly at the estate sales who buy large quantities of books for resale. There's at least one app (I know you hate them!) that identifies the higher valued books. My husband and I buy books, but it's mostly to complete a few series and for reading purposes.

I used to go to a lot of library sales. They were usually on Friday afternoon at 5 pm or on Saturday morning. I had some great finds. One time I got first editions of The Firm and Fight Club in brand new condition for $1 each. My friend at the same sale got signed John Irving and Ray Bradbury books. The trick to library sales is to know exactly what you're looking for (the type of book, not specific authors) and make quick decisions (don't waste time debating over if you should get it). I would always have a store where I could sell or trade the books I didn't want but I had to know what types of books they'd be interested in. It was a lot of fun but at the end book dealers started running the sales and the inventory was picked over so I stopped going.

A really good place to get great books was the bargain section of Crown Books and Barnes and Noble. Probably my best find was stacks of signed copies of Blue Dog by George Rodrigue. They would have tons of books by authors like Michael Connelly (The Lincoln Lawyer) and Lee Child (Jack Reacher). I could spend hours going thru the stacks of new books for $5. I would go on trips where I'd drive from Los Angeles and hit as many bookstores as I could and then go surfing. I'd make it to Carlsbad on the first night, San Diego on the 2nd night, and then drive back. Of course, if the surf was good I'd stay longer.

I need computer advice. I've only had my laptop for 2 years. It's an entry level HP and the keyboard is all messed up. I'm wondering if I should pay to have it fixed or buy a new computer. I've never liked this one because the keyboard has always done weird stuff that I don't want it to. The computer I had before this one was a Lenovo. It worked better but didn't hold up. I'm thinking about a HP at Staples. It's a $900 computer on sale for around $350 with a 17" screen which will be great for the UFC. What should I do?
