Drugstore/Grocery Chat Thread

Do you have a Vons? I live next door to one so I do most of my grocery shopping there. Every now and then I'll go to Ralphs or Walmart but that's only if I borrow a friend's car. They're too hard to get to by bus and they're out of my walking range. Walmart is a 6 mile round trip with a steep uphill at the end of the walk. I did it a couple of weeks ago but it was too much for me especially with carrying a bag of groceries home.

Albertsons affiliates (Safeway, etc) sells a nice store brand, O Organics. Their tortilla chips are good and competitively priced. A couple years ago, they changed the packaging. When they did, the quantity was reduced from 10 oz per bag to 8.25 oz. I'm sure there are other examples but this one sprang immediately to mind since I buy them regularly and was disappointed to see the downsizing of the product.

Does anyone else feel like eating out at sit down restaurants is just too expensive?

At many of them, it is, but we are lucky to have a great mexican food restaurant we love here. Entrees are mostly all under $20 each and include rice, beans, salad and tortillas. Add to that, we of course get warm chips and their homemade salsa. I should also mention they probably have the best frozen margaritas in town, but we only have one small one each. While we each get our own meal, we routinely bring home enough for us to each have another meal out of it.

Netflix cancelled The Night Agent and The Lincoln Lawyer. Netflix comes out with 700 new shows a year but 690 of them are bad. I wonder why they cancelled two good ones.

I used to go to the $1.99 Taco Tuesday at Baja Fresh. It wasn't fine dinning but I loved their chicken tacos. Sadly, the special is gone now. I stuck my head in a Baja Fresh a year ago and a plain old bean and cheese burrito was $10. Nope, it's not for me anymore. There was another Mexican restaurant that I liked and they also had a $1.99 Taco Tuesday. People would be lined up around the block but it was worth the wait. Unfortunately, they closed during covid. There are a lot of Mexican restaurants by me but I haven't found a good one yet. When I lived in a different part of Los Angeles, there was one on every corner. I miss going out to eat but it's tough to do with no car and my health issues. Plus, I'm priced out at most places. I'm on a strict budget and I'm already way over it because of how much grocery prices have gone up.

I've never been to an estate sale but I have gone over to someone's house to bid on a rare book collection. Her husband passed away and she didn't want the books anymore. I ended up winning and then I had to figure out how to move the books and where to put them. He was a doctor and also a book collector. I would see him at signings but I didn't know him. I was surprised that his wife picked me. I was up against some pros and I had never done anything like this before. It was an interesting experience. It was more than 20 years ago back when the book business was booming and there were a lot of collectors.

We have some taco places we like, but at the place we go, we get a huge plate of food.

I'm sure it does not compare, but there are at least two guys we see pretty regularly at the estate sales who buy large quantities of books for resale. There's at least one app (I know you hate them!) that identifies the higher valued books. My husband and I buy books, but it's mostly to complete a few series and for reading purposes.

As I understand it, anyone can post a sale to estatesales dot net for about $100. In our area, there's usually at least one sale that is not handled by one of the bigger groups doing estate sales.
