They are good depending on what you use them for. I've had mine for 3 years. Previously had the HD 600, HD 700 and a pile of other midrange headphones. The HD 700 had about 80% of the soundstage of the HD 800 S. Though the sound signature is more in line with the HD 600 but with much more transparency. Where the HD800 S is weak is bass so if that's important to you look elsewhere. I got it for the clarity and the soundstage as it fits my needs better. I don't use them for just music. Don't expect them to change your life. Sometimes they can actually be a little boring. That's when you need to consider EQ…
How does it compare to comparable high end Audiotechnica ? Where is it made. ? I have a mid range Audiotechnica made. In Japan. Can not remeber the exact model but I compared it to this brand midrange at that time and liked the Audiotechnica more. Sound stage, highs and lows were more natural and accurate But mids on Sennheiser we're better. Both were enclosed not open back

I have the HD8XX, the amp makes a word of difference with these headphones. They scale very well with power.
I am using mine primarily with the XDUOO TA-22 and the combo makes me smile.
For those who are interested in this I recommend you try the HIFIMAN Arya as well. To me the Arya has an expansive soundstage and more detail than HD800. Sennheiser has weaker bass and for my music taste I have to return it.

Probably the best pair of headphones money can buy. I'm still in the sub $200 range of audiophile or else I'd consider. Currently using sennheiser HD 560s with a Qudelix 5k amp and can attest to the comfort and quality of the sennheiser's
