They are good depending on what you use them for. I've had mine for 3 years. Previously had the HD 600, HD 700 and a pile of other midrange headphones. The HD 700 had about 80% of the soundstage of the HD 800 S. Though the sound signature is more in line with the HD 600 but with much more transparency. Where the HD800 S is weak is bass so if that's important to you look elsewhere. I got it for the clarity and the soundstage as it fits my needs better. I don't use them for just music. Don't expect them to change your life. Sometimes they can actually be a little boring. That's when you need to consider EQ…

Man. Some people can afford to blow so much money on a headphone. I am happy listening to stuff on my $15 dollar Anker via buds
Same with anything else that has a high end 'phile market, if you're happy with what ya got, STICK WITH IT! As with many things in life, ignorance truly is bliss! Best to not know what you MIGHT be missing and not waste your money! And for all dat coin you dont blow on stuff like this, well, pick yourself up a Bogleheads book (Guide to Investing) and make dat munny werk for you!
These with tubes are magic for the right music. The soundstage is so big for headphones, it's unreal. As stated below, the weakness is bass impact. You still hear the bass, but it does not have a ton of slam for me. However, I love some music on these more than I ever have before. I've only listed to friends before, but I'm sure I'll pick up a set of these at some point. Super light and comfortable too by the way.
These headphones are basically all about having an incredible soundstage and they do succeed magnificently at that. Unfortunately, basically everything else varies from just fine to pretty good for this price point. I would highly recommend these cans if you're all about having an atmospheric experience or are a competitive fps player with money to burn. For everyone else, there are probably better options.

I am currently using 660S paired with O2 + SDAC DAC/AMP which works really well.
I don't want to upgrade my AMP/DAC at the moment so we will see how the 800S fares in this setup.

If you're a music lover then you can probably justify going up to the ~$200-300 range.
Only audio weirdos spend more than that...
/me hides his mountain of headphones and amps/dacs
