Is there anything this one enables that the base model would struggle with?

Running local AI, that extra 12GB of RAM enables a lot of options that are basically unusable with 36GB.

But even then, 48GB isn't going to let you run anything amazing, it's just going to enable some slightly less-bad local models. Worth it for educational purposes, IMO, but for serious AI you would really want a 256GB or 512GB ultra.

Outside of AI, double the SSD space is also pretty nice for long-term use.

Future proofing doesn't exist in the pc world.
It'll be outdated in a year with something newer, faster, better, next gen this and version 0.0xxx that and build version late 2026 or early 2027!

For reference, this is $300 less than Apple's education pricing for this computer.

I run qwen 3.8 27b (Q4) on a M5 Max with 36 GB of RAM. It works quickly and well enough for what I need it to do.

48GB is more ideal to run local LLM's with lots of context as well as image generation. Generally it's a debate between 32GB vs 64GB configurations - but 48GB is also enough for Qwen 3.8 or Gemma 4 with larger context.

With qwen 3.8 27b (Q4), how much context can you fit?

Yes it will, even though the context size will be limited (around 70k)

Mac mini m4 pro with 48GB 512GB is $1000 cheaper, not sure if this is worth for local llm. Bandwidth and cooling will be a higher in studio. Will Mac mini able to handle decent model
