  • When you link your accounts:
    • JAL Mileage Bank Members can receive a Marriott Bonvoy status match, bonus points, and more.
    • Marriott Bonvoy Members can receive Fly On Points towards higher JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) status.
  • A status match recognises the elite status you already hold in one programme by granting you a corresponding status or benefits in the other. Eligibility depends on your tier at the time you register.
  • Not every tier receives a status match. Some tiers are instead offered an accelerator challenge — a faster path to status that requires a set number of Qualifying Nights.
  • Check the table (scroll down) to see what applies to your tier.
  • Refer to the original post & forum comments for additional details & discussion.

How exactly do you get by the postal code when signing up if it's only for Japan addresses?

Figured it out - just went to a different signup page outside of the link account page and signed up, then signed in on the linking page.

Are you talking about joining the JAL loyalty program?
Did you choose: "Those living in the U.S., Canada, Central & South America, and Guam" on the page where it states: "If you live outside Japan, please register as an overseas member from the registration page of the country you live in."

It's not 20k points though it's credit towards status earning points ☠️☠️. Tried to ask an LLM about it, it seems like the lowest 30k tier only gets you priority bag dropoff, and extra bags on domestic (international always has lots of baggage allowance), plus some other stuff that's not useful. Although the llm did get tripped up, apparently 15k of the 30k has to come from flying JAL, so I guess you would actually need 35k total, but can't confirm that.

Seattle to Japan round trip is about 10k miles (NY Japan is 14k), so if the ai is wrong, then one round trip would be enough to push you into JAL Crystal status at 30k total miles, assuming you fly a 1:1 ticket class.

Also confirming lifetime platinum counts as platinum.

The JAL status earners don't get much out of this. Marriott Gold is kinda worthless and already free to get from credit cards. If you travel enough to get any status at JAL you most certainly have status at some hotel chain.
