I don't know anything, but want to listen. Is this worth my money?
I have had a baofeng handheld for 15 years and it is still working well. You can not transmit unless you have a ham radio license. I use mostly use mine to listen to storm spotters/weather service but there is an app that allows you to do the same thing, even though it is slightly delayed.

Needing a license is like saying you can't pirate the latest movie release. The local sheriff and much less the FBi isn't going to knock down your door.

Ham radio operators have competitions to find signals that are transmitting. It is called direction finding. There can be huge fines from the FCC.

It's a regulatory spec on transmit power and distance to the head, not an actual risk. Nobody would be able to feel heating from that at 4" from them.
Has nothing to do with heat. Research it, 10W radios should not transmit next to your head, we don't hold them 4" away either. A few times won't kill your brain but very often may harm it. Google it, ash AI, read about it on forums or Redit & Quora, it's easy. These are probably not putting out thje full 10W but it still matters.

You obviously have no idea about people in the HAM community. They will try to find you if you're broadcasting without a license and that's not tinfoil hat talk.

I'm curious to know how a person can be identified as broadcasting with or without a license.

Radio Detection Finding aka FOX HUNTING.
They use directional antennas and triangulation.
They can also use SDR (software defined radios).. which let them analyze what time the signal arrives at the receiver in the region.
Then there's the FCC themselves and there's like a volunteer network as to find them.
They don't mess around as I said. They take it all very serious. So if you don't have a license just listen and avoid the hassles.
(Also I'm no expert and I'm just referencing what I know. I'm sure you can find more info watching a YouTube video or reading an article.. But this is the jist of how it goes down.)
99% of those frequencies are dead 99% of the time .... only use is buy 2 so you have someone to talk to..
forget the dmr part unless you have a few hours to set it up and would want to say hi to strangers
I wouldn't forget the DMR part if you want full 256-bit AES encryption for secure comms, which this radio supports.
*an amateur radio license is required to transmit on this radio unless it's an emergency. Encryption on amateur/ham frequencies is illegal.
