For those wondering, tank printers can be cheaper per page than a laser printer. However you need to print a lot to take advantage of it.

Tank printers also have many of the same issues as regular cartridge inkjet printers. For example the nozzle is going to clog if you leave it sitting idle for long stretches. There are more moving parts and potential messes so that decreases its reliability over laser.

I downloaded a CMYK image from Wikipedia (big graphic of the primary colors). I print it every few weeks so all the print heads get used a decent amount without running a clean cycle. Works great.

Much better than HP which dumps ink almost every time you go to print.

Print a color pic every 2-3 weeks. The ink is so cheap it costs almost nothing.

If your feeder is sticking open the panels up and wipe down the gear wheels with a clean damp rag, it'll fix it.

I bought a brother color laser and I'm learning that it's very expensive if you print a lot of color 😭

Same here. I have had the ET-4700 for over 10 years now & have only had to use the power clean option twice which does use a lot of ink but only when the normal cleaning doesn't clean up ink clogged heads. I don't make copies often but I can always find something to make a copy of, so I just need to copy something at least once or twice a month to prevent the ink heads from clogging. Have only purchased one set of Epson's ink color bottles since buying it & they stay fresh in the bottles that they sent the ink in.

$200 for a quality inkjet AIO isn't actually bad at all. You can find them cheaper ... with DRM overpriced carts maybe.

TBH it depends on your habits.

Me? I print well under 100 pages a year. Laser is the only option to avoid clogged heads.

If someone prints often enough and wants reasonable quality graphics, plus AIO? This is a strong deal.

I brought the Epson EcoTank ET-3750 8 years ago at Costco. Still using the original ink that came with it.

I recently replaced the ink maintenance box a couple of months ago for $18. The key is not let the ink dry out on the print head by doing a regular print pattern check every 1-2 months. If you see the print pattern has missing lines. Do a clean and it should clear up. Sometimes I print the pattern check a few times just to clear the print head, only do the print head cleaning when necessary. This routine print head check had kept the printer running smoothly for years. Money well spent in my opinion.

About a week ago, I bought ET-3958 certified refurbished with 2 year Allstate warranty from Epson on Ebay for $180, though now it is listed at $230. Couldn't really tell that it was used and although it is an older model, it is a more capable model than this one I believe.

You do not understand what you're talking about here. I love lasers and prefer them at work and at home, but both of those applications are predominantly document printing. A color laser MFP is going to be about double the price of this and will be less flexible and notably worse at photo printing.

There are absolutely applications where something like this is the best fit for the purpose, even if you don't take budget into consideration. As soon as budget IS consideration, this will smash a color laser MFP for the money. You're arguably better off wasting a print every 2 weeks vs buying the color laser equivalent, unless you almost never print. And in that case, just go to the library.

I was considering sending one of these to my uncle in the Caribbean. The climate is quite warm, and they don't print often but it's good to have it as convenience.

The house they are in has no central air. Would the biggest issue be the ink drying out? or the machine clogging after some time of non-use?

Honestly, FB marketplace or a bankruptcy sale is probably the best bet if you don't want to drop the $500+ on one. I'm sure there may be some BF deals but I can't see picking one up for less than $400 new. I've just migrated to ordering DTF prints and pressing them, or breaking up my design into multiple sheets. There are places that will do large sublimation transfers but I can't justify that cost for small job and hobby stuff.

I just got the ET-3958 for $220 REFURB - WITH - Two year warranty from eBay directly from Epson.

This is how they compare:

Gist: The ET-3950 is a pretty substantial upgrade over the ET-4800 in most areas. The main thing the older ET-4800 has that the ET-3950 does not is fax.

I got for $180 about 10 days ago, might return to that price if you are not in urgent need of a printer.

Also, in case people aren't aware, if you don't frequently print, you want to print a test page that uses a little bit of each of the inks about once a week to keep the printer in good working condition. I used Gemini to help me set up a script to automate that.
