So I never understood how long are these good for? Do you have to replace them?

1000+ is 1001, 10,000, and 100, 000,000. Are you counting your 1000+ drier loads?

Do these things really work to reduce static? They seem to create more static for me.

I'm sure at some point it becomes apparent when it's time to throw them out

Yes, at some point, they sort of start to loosen and come unraveled. We used our set for over three years, so they last a long time.

I use tennis balls. We have plenty around the house. But I'll switch over to these since they are dedicated for the task.

I stopped using dryer sheets years ago in favor of these.

Tip 1: you use all six at the same time. Using fewer leads to more static
Tip 2: they will sneak out of the dryer, so shortly after you start to like them, you'll need to buy more.
Tip3: Replace when size is significantly smaller or they look dirty. The balls become less dense over time.
