Keep in mind the new M6 256GB version has slow SSD and to make it worse, they soldered it so you're stuck with a slow, small SSD forever. The 512GB version has double the speeds (normal PCIe Gen 4 speeds) in both read and write.

Not as good as the MicroCenter $699.99 price but a lot more accessible to people. Best non-MC deal so far.

That's the M4 version vs the M6 in this deal.

16gb/512gb SSD is $949.99. little better than the $999.99 at Microcenter.

$20 more for the 512gb model at costco seems like a better deal: https://slickdeals.net/f/20098299

The price increase on these has made it a bit unaffordable for me. I miss these when they were $499. I know the capabilities have increased, but darn.

Yeah… not a deal. This is still a $600 computer. Not playing the fake prices game with Apple lately.

Best Buy matched the $699 Micro Center deal for me a couple of days ago! Just chat with an agent online, and they will reimburse you the difference.

Good as you'll get at the moment. I get the impression anything over 16GB is going to get gated for consumers in the near future to protect the moat around high end AI models. The demand is certainly there and RAM is expensive but not to this degree.

Did they actually reimburse you yet? Have heard reports that they refused to price match to start, and that people weren't getting reimbursed either. What worked for me was going in store. $699 - $500 m4 base trade-in was the only thing that made this worth it for me. That and I have a NAS and high speed attached local storage

This or the m5 pro? Can anyone weigh in for a use case of running local open source AI for coding ?

I still have a macbook Pro M1, convince me why I would need a mac mini. What are people using these for?

Mostly the same things that most people use the MacBook Pro for, non pro things. As far as performance goes, huge improvement only for those that actually need more. If you have no issues with your current Mac, I wouldn't upgrade just because. Here is some benchmarks:
MacBook Pro M1 , Mac mini M6 (Base), Performance Jump
Geekbench Single-Core
2,187 3,931 +80% faster
Geekbench Multi-Core
8,581 22,783 +165% faster
Geekbench Metal (Graphics)
28,528 108,331 +280% faster

People are buying these up to run AI agents like Grok Bot on them. They're online 24/7 and you use your phone to chat with your agents to do things on your computer.
