i am not a fisherman but i wonder if someone can explain to me why this one cost $3-4, some yamomoto brand on same page is $7-8, and generic chinese brand is $10 for 20 of these including hooks and some other baits... they all look the same. what is the difference?

The quality of the plastic. Some look realistic and some look stiff and fake. It's all about the action of the bait. However, a lot of the time it's more about the fisherman and the confidence the bait brings. Start with a few cheaper baits to get started then see if the $ makes a difference. Ultimately the best bait you can use for ponds and creeks is a live worm with a small hook and a split sinker. Once you get to lakes or rivers moving baits cover water faster and can trigger aggressive bites.

The main difference is the price, which correlates to brand market popularity, not much to the chance of catching fish, imho. Let's take plastic worms as examples. Yamamoto is a prestigious brand, and its worms do carry some salty flavor, and some people like its texture, thinking they mimic better swimming gestures. But I found them much brittler than Yum's dinger worms, which means you have change new ones and buy more. And to my own experience, Yum dinger catches basses just fine, no big difference from Senko in terms of fishing efficiency. But a pack of Yum worms last much longer than Yamamoto worms, and it cost less than half of a bag of Yamamoto. The same probably holds true to other lures. After the tails of my soft plastic minnows were bitten off by fish, they continued to catch fish efficiently. The differences among the same type of lures often matter more to people rather than to fish.
