No longer an issue. You can use other drives. Look for CMR drives from Seagate or WD.

My PSU failed right after the warranty expires, it cost me $100+ to purchase a new one from them (including shipping) and 2 weeks to rebuild the raid.
Not to mention the hard drive lock in shenanigans they tried to pull.

Your experience is not the usual. I support 40+ Synology (between my home office and clients) and power supply issues have affected 2 units.

I would be considering the 8 bay deal if circumstances were different. But the Four 8 bay units I have are chugging along and I can't justify this right now. (Did have to have some repaired but it was well worth the hassle and expense and no data lost thanks to backups.)

What happened to your 8bay. I'm thinking about upgrading my 1817+ just to get ahead of any potential hardware failures at this point. The unit is pretty old but still works great.

Lots of gently used drives with zero errors available for reasonable cost. Yes, it's a risk but it is a viable alternative for those in need.
