I hear you but I've never had an issue with cardboard spools. Also this thing can be put into the recycling bin. I have enough reusable plastic ones that I give them away on marketplace.

New to cardboard, if going in an ams, just put tape around the edge of the spool where it rolls?

They absorb moisture. Reusable plastic and refill spools are the way to go.
