Would it be a good upgrade to an M3 macbook pro? I mostly use windows and Linux but bought the macbook for the 20 hour battery life for mobile use as most x86 laptops used way too much power.

I have this exact model for work (from my employer) and it's been an exceptional PC. Before I used a MBP2 and this Yoga is noticeably faster- even running windows. Battery life is about the same. Not great, not terrible. This won't run Linux well from what I can tell- so don't buy it for that. Otherwise, it's just all around good- keyboard, screen, performance. This price is a great deal for this device.

Hard to say, many factors. First and most important, are the apps/programs you need to run on Windows or Linux actually runnable under Windows ARM or Linux ARM? Assuming the answer is yes, battery life as you know can be affected by MacOS versus Windows OS, screen size/brightness/technology (M3 uses microLED at 120hz, this Lenovo 7x uses OLED at only 60hz), which apps/programs are running and running in the background, etc. I have the first generation 7x with the X1-Elite and 14.5" OLED 3K 90hz, and I average about 12-14 hours under mixed workloads, not sure with this version that has the X2-Elite 14" OLED 2k 60hz. I will say that the performance to battery-life balance has been the best for me compared to any Intel/AMD laptops I've had, and I've had quite a few.

Upgrades (from M3Pro to 7X)
  • Noticeably better single-core performance (eg. Geekbench 6 (Single-Core): Apple M3 Pro: ~3,150, Lenovo Slim 7X: ~3,850)
  • Significantly lower price: M3Pro with 36GB RAM was $2,399 new, this is on sale for less than half of that
Neutral
  • I'm going to guess that the battery life between the M3Pro and this 7X will be comparable
Downgrades (from M3Pro to 7X)
  • Everything else. To be fair, as mentioned, you're comparing a $2,399 laptop when it was new to this sale version for less than half of that, the Slim 7X is clearly a midrange line despite the high non-sale price, Lenovo's best laptop line is usually the X1 Carbon. The biggest hit you'll notice going from the M3Pro to 7X will be GPU performance, the improved X2-85 gpu still can't compete with the M3Pro. The next biggest hit will be screen resolution, you're going from 254 PPI to 162 PPI, and 120hz down to 60hz. There is an upgraded screen available as a custom build, it is 2.8k at 120hz, but that is not this version, at least this is OLED. Another big hit will be the downgraded build quality: Macbooks have probably one of the best laptop speakers, these ones sound tiny (typical for Windows laptops), you wont get haptic touchpad (this version is mechanical touchpad unfortunately), you wont get as nice of a tactile feel on the keyboard, etc. Again, not really a fair comparison.
If you think of this as less than half price of the m3pro because it is, and pair expectations accordingly, hopefully you wont be disappointed. I think with the X2-Elite 12 core (this is not the 18-core with the X2-90), OLED, and 32GB RAM at this price, it's a great deal.

The gpu (called x2-85), although vastly improved from the 1st gen, still falls way behind the best integrated gpu's from intel/amd/apple, compounded by the fact that most aaa games don't run natively on ARM, it'll be fine for basic graphic demands. The screen itself on this 7x version is low end oled, at only 60hz and low 2k resolution, there is a 2.8k 120hz screen, but I've only seen it on custom builds of the 7x. And finally, and perhaps most importantly, you have to know whether the apps/programs you care about can actually run on Windows on ARM. Thankfully all of mine can running the built-in Prism emulation, but doesn't necessarily mean yours can, you'll need to do your research on app compatibility. That being all said, at this price point, I think this is a great deal, as long as you can live with these compromises.
