I think using a cellphone can be handy, but if you're needing a magnifier for an extended period of time, a tool like this is a far better solution. You get to a certain age, and these things become essential.
As far as durability is concerned, I'm not sure what you're doing with your magnifying glasses. I have at least 5 or 6 that I use regularly and have never had an issue with the lens becoming scratched in any way.
