There seems to be another one for even less (30.99 w/ coupon) that snaps together rather than screws. https://a.co/d/0gRqiZiy

These are AMAZING. - Have one on my older truck that doesn't have the latest version of Sync. One on a trailer. One on my tool chest with the most valuable things. etc. Be sure to use the proper lithium batteries and not alkaline.

I have 4× as well, all with Energizer Max alkaline batteries. What is the issue with using alkaline?

Lithium is the right application for super low draw over a long period like this. Alkaline will work, just not as long.

If it's waterproof, it will almost soundproof too.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing if a thief is alerted to an airtag "following them" in a stolen item. After being alerted, they can make the airtag play a sound to help them locate it (anti-stalker feature). If you have hidden it well, and the sound can't be heard, a thief either has to "search really hard" or dump the tagged item(s) to keep from being tracked. These are less to help you find things like your keys or a bag, and more about tracking things that might get stolen (cars, boats, trailers, construction equipment, etc.). Some people even remove the airtag speaker entirely to make sure they are silent and harder to find: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vAQNedIa0o

A zip lock bag is water proof and not sound proof so what exactly are you smoking?

Moto Tags are almost the exact same size as an Airtag and fit with no modifications if you aren't worried about a tight waterproof fit, just loosely tighten the screws on the tag side. For the Moto Tag to fit water-tight I had to grind down a ridge on the inside of non-battery side of the case or it will put too much pressure on the Moto tag.

Bought these in AA and AAA after reading a web article on them. They work, but it should be noted that the effective range of finding an item live is maybe half of what the original AirTags give. There has to be something about the metal battery cap acting as an antenna; that these guys lose with the battery modification. You can be in the same room and Find Me will struggle to point out the distance and location. Other than that, it works OK for pinpointing a last known general location.
