Peh. Don'r connect your TV to the internet, use an Apple TV instead. Problem solved!

I mean, come on. Do you use Android? Most Android phones do all that at a minimum.

Not trying to stir the pot but I just read an article that says the TVs scan & find public WiFi networks that they can connect to even loosely to send data, I'm really wondering if it's true! Also - maybe settings can just fix that issue anyway?

Yes, the LG TV they had did. And many apps on android and iOS will try to do that too. That's why you should never allow them to find other devices on your network unless it's their job to find devices on your network.

I guess it's a "settings" situation. Most people who buy a TV don't know enough about this stuff to go into the advanced settings to turn off these things. The TV literally records audio and sends it back to LG, they brag about it on interviews on how they can connect your phone to it too and mobile advertise. A very small percentage of the population is savvy enough to know how to dig deep & avoid those things (it seems you're one of them!), for the rest of us, we end up finding these things out as they hit the news cycle unfortunately. I don't think anything you said is untrue, I just feel like the burden shouldn't be what it is. Welp!

The problem is I don't think you can turn off a lot of that stuff. The network scanning probably happens automatically, and the voice stuff is probably opt-out.

Vizio's whole business model is selling your information to advertisers. It's likely that every TV sold today does these things.

Great point. I read that Walmart bought Vizio for that exact reason. Financial documents showed a small profit or net loss on hardware sales but a huge upside on the advertisement stuff!
