Good price for Zen 3 threadripper pro but there the memory bandwidth is limited compared to the 32 core and up version. Also Newegg is extremely stingy on accepting any offer, so doubt they will.

I'm not entirely knowledgeable, but why is this processor so much more expensive than the 5950? I know this one is a "workstation" CPU while the 5950 is considered "consumer" or whatever, but is there that much of a performance boost?

For memory specifically, it provides more memory channels. While desktop systems normally support 2 channels (dual channel), this supports up to 8 (octa-channel). This, doesn't guarantee that things run faster. Similar to having more cores in a system, it largely depends on how well the system does things in parallel.
The PCIe lanes would be really helpful for GPU workloads outside of gaming. For example, when doing work with AI/LLMs, you could combine multiple GPUs to work together. Maybe video encoding or 3D rendering software can make use of multiple GPUs as well.
Think of a sports car vs a truck mentality. Usually people benefit the most from something that moves faster. But in some situations, focusing on being able to haul a whole lot more at once is far more beneficial than just prioritizing top speed.

Okay this makes sense. Truly for workstation applications where you possibly need to do a whole lot of different tasks at once rather than a few tasks very quickly. Didn't know that would be such a premium but I get it.
