Better read the reviews. This printer uses roll with chip, you will have to buy their chip equipped rolls which as you can image, are expensive. That is probably why they are selling it for 15 bucks.

Yup, in addition to other costs.

Just bought the 110 model and it's nice but there are lots of upsell options. Anything more than very basic text needs a monthly subscription to access.

You don't... just a hold a legit roll up to the back of the machine and it will scan OUTSIDE the machine, with a generic roll inside. Then you're good for the whole roll.
I own 3 Niimbots (various models)

Or if you find the nfc chip, cut it and tape it on the printer, you will never need to worry about using other 3rd party tapes.

PS: deal still works. I don't know why it was flagged as expired. When you buy more than one, you even get another 20% off automatically. I got mine for $13 each.

A few things to note:

  • This uses proprietary labels and is a pain to try and work around. Hence the really low price to get you in the door so they can profit of you on the labels. It's the printer and ink business model.
  • These labels contains variations of PFAS/BPA/BPS. They transfer through contact and is absorbed through the skin. So you can transfer it from one container to another just by touching it. They're also commonly on thermal cash register receipts as well.
For the first point, you can buy a different brand that is more open and doesn't lock you in. Phomemo is the brand I bought (and returned once I realized it contains those chemicals). It doesn't lock you into their specific labels. The prints are about the same, and the apps are very similar to NIIMBOT. The cost is usually a tad more, but you make that back on pretty much the first roll of label you buy. I've not noticed any quality differences.

For the second point, that's more of a personal health concern. Not everybody is, and that's okay. Some are not okay with it, and that's fine too. Just informing you, which is what I wish others did for me. If you don't know what those chemicals are, I highly recommend at least doing basic research on it and see if you're okay with that.
