As much as I liked my 4 cell baseball bat-i mean maglite, its time to move on. ~350 lumens for 2.5 hours, in this day and age, is nothing special.

That 4 cell Maglite is about the only bat that is legal to carry in my neck of the woods. And it is perfectly fine to have it within the reach in your vehicle (unlike some other objects). This makes it a really good option for a spare flashlight in many urban areas around the country.

There is a reason police carried it for many, many years, even when better flashlights became available.
Here are the interesting examples:
McQurter versus City of Atlanta (1983): During a violent struggle, an Atlanta officer struck McQurter's head several times with a four-cell metal flashlight while McQurter was kicking the officers and attempting to exit the police vehicle.
Or this one:
Los Angeles, 2004, defensive use of a large metal patrol flashlight: Ricky Palmer allegedly punched an LAPD officer in the face during an "all-out brawl." The officer responded by striking him with a large, heavy flashlight. Police Chief William Bratton initially said the flashlight use appeared appropriate under the circumstances.

I meant its time to move on from maglite as a brand, specially why buy this 2 cell AA light.

Two minutes after the deal went live, you were already here telling people to abandon an American manufacturer, while China-made budget lights get pushed in practically every flashlight thread.

This Maglite is designed, engineered, and assembled at its California factory, with the body and most parts made there, and it carries a 10-year limited warranty. Nobody claimed it wins a lumen contest (or any contest for that matter). Some people juist want a dependable 2-AA light from a U.S. manufacturer. And 4.6 rating from 11, 000 people on Amazon confirm this.

If you're trying not to look like a shill, you're doing a terrible job.

I would fight you on the "reliable" part. I had one blow up in my glove box that I kept as an emergency light. I assumed it was because of the Duracel batteries leaking. Until a 2nd one I had in my tool box in the garage wouldn't power on. It had enveloops in it and those things never leak. We'll I couldn't open it to recharge the batteries even with 2 wrenches the cap has somehow corroded itself shut. It was inside a 72" tool chest so no liquids or anything to be found.

After that I started buying Chinese Olights and never had an issue since.

Just my experience with Maglite.

I hear you. Thank you for sharing your experience. Maglite is far from the best and brightest, and there are better options out there.
However, you lost me when you brought up "Chinese Olights."
If you just said Chinese manufacturer (or even better: "other manufacturer"), your statement would be much stronger.

Because the Internet is flooded with shills and affiliates for Olight. Honestly, it is annoying.
Olight makes some really good lights. But, they and their fans tend to hype them as the best, brightest, and at times almost supernatural lights, which they are not.
On the other hand, there are thousands of testimonies about some of their overpriced low quality models, light failures, and shady business practices. There is even a very active FB group with a couple of thousands people in it, called Olight Garbage.

So yeah, every time someone shows up out of blue to praise their lights, especially when the subject is not related to them, I tend to cringe a little bit.

I'm definitely not a shill for Olight and my first non maglite light was actually a Fenix PD35 that I still have in my tool chest, but I do have to say I EDC a warrior Micro. Each of my cars has a Baton II in case of emergency.

That being said I absolutely hate my original Olight R50 becaise the light pattern is terrible and the proprietary battery is terrible and sooooo hard to find a replacement... I struggled to find a replacement when the original battery stopped holding a charge.

I said Chinese olights because well... they are a Chinese company, but in my experience they make some very good lights. Definitely better than Maglite in my personal experience.

Thank you for your honest response. As someone who uses flashlights frequently, both personally and professionally, I own lights from every manufacturer you mentioned here, along with many others. My experience is that they all make some great models and some not-so-great ones.

I bought this particular light for my grandmother. She is a James Bond fan and told me that Bond carried a this Mini Maglite in one of the movies! 🙂(I have no idea if this is true, it's been a long time since a saw a Bond movie). But she loves it, and she keeps it on her night stand.

Her other favorite small flashlight is the Coast HX5, which I gave her after owning it for a while. It is super simple and AA-powered, and I gave her a package of rechargeable NiMH batteries to use with it.
Coast is another brand that gets no love from the "experts" (it has made some crappy lights, but also it has some classics like this one). My point is that some people just need a simple flashlight with straightforward on/off operation, low and high modes, and nothing more.
