The ds9 tribble episode included in the original series blu-ray set looked incredible. Wish there was more.
Yeah, it's REALLY hard to go back to SD after that. In fact, that's one of my go to examples when people ask if Blu-ray really is that much better than DVD quality.

My favorite Trek Series. The best versions of this actually had been the Laser Disc release. We only got a like 2 and a half seasons that way though. Japan I think got like 5 seasons. Later seasons looked better on DVD because they switched methods anyways from my understanding. I haven't stayed up to date but their was a fan project involving Ai going on a few years back.

I serious doubt Laserdisc version is better. My Pioneer CLD-98 has the best resolution of any Laserdisc player ever made and it clocked at 430+ lines from Video Magazine testing. DVD is 480P. Laserdisc is analog in video, and it is possible DVD video may have more artifacts than LD video. But DVD will always be a tad sharper.

I didn't know DS9 was on LD, but the good seasons are the last two. Even if what you said is true, it's probably not worth it to get it. I do still buy Laserdiscs with movies that aren't on DVD and Blu-ray.

The first three seasons were edited onto composite tapes, and the transfer they did from those to DVD, which is component video, does not look great, so the laserdiscs for those years look better in my, and many people's, opinion. Starting with season four, they used component tapes for the masters, so the DVDs look much better.

There are dumps of the laserdiscs on archive.org, I believe, though you would need to turn that into a playable format yourself, or find where someone already has.

When will they ever have HD for this series and Voyager?
https://bleedingcool.com/tv/star-...ot-happen/

If you want a very technical explanation:

"Unlike TNG, which shot both all of their live-action and all of their model photography on 35mm film, which made scanning the original elements possible, both DS9 and Voyager made extensive use of CGI for their visual effects, especially in the later seasons. Those visual effects were rendered in standard NTSC resolution, with a maximum of 525 scan lines of resolution per second, split between two interlaced video fields of 262.5 scan lines running at 60 fields per second. So, the original resolution remains far, far below what audiences used to today's HD, and now UHD resolutions, are accustomed to. These VFX could be upscaled 5x, but they'd have no detail. The Starship Defiant would look like a fuzzy, grey blob. If the VFX assets originally created for the shows could be acquired, which is a HUGE if, they could be reworked and re-rerendered in 2K resolution for Blu-ray, but even then, VFX artists would have to go in and add all kinds of upgrades to the original shots to make the ships, planets, weapons fire and explosions. They look like they fit in with the gorgeous live-action photography. This would entail a number of artists working many, many long hours at considerable expense."

Burnett then broke down that some of the original VFX was lost of the two shows, "During the latter seasons of the TNG restoration, Mojo, one of the original, Emmy-Winning VFX artists on Voyager, who, at the time, was still in possession of many of the original DS9 and Voyager VFX assets, did a re-rendering VFX test on footage from 'The Sacrifice of Angels.' The test really looked spectacular and proved it could be done. But again, it would still take very talented VFX artists working long hours to accomplish the number of shots required for the episodes at great cost. However, since then, I've heard many of these assets have been lost, either through drive failure or simply the dumping of all the original data. The only alternative would be to re-create all of the CG VFX shots from scratch, much the same way CBS Digital re-created TOS' visual effects. But with the number of elements needed during DS9's Dominion War arc, with sometimes hundreds of starships in combat, this could cost in the millions, if not tens of millions of dollars, depending on who was doing the VFX."

Possibly. Until recently, an official HD version was thought to be off the table because DS9 and Voyager were shot on video and not film (unlike TNG).

However, advances in AI upscaling might eventually make the creation of an HD version financially attractive.

There are actually bootleg, AI-upscaled versions currently out there if you're willing to do some searching.

But if you want to stay legal, currently the best way to watch DS9 and Voyager is to buy the DVD boxes shipped/sold by Amazon and play them on a computer equipped with a Nvidia RTX GPU.

VLC media player can leverage Nvidia's Video Super Resolution (VSR) feature to upscale the DVDs so they look very close to HD.

Probably never. Think I remember hearing that the TNG HD remaster they scanned the film and re-did the special effects for didn't sell as well as hoped. And that was a more popular series than DS9 and Voyager were. Too expensive to do for probable lackluster sales. Maybe an AI-assisted remaster would now be possible and be much less costly. I'd totally re-buy everything in HD.
Some fans were working on an AI-assisted 4K version a few years ago. I can't remember how many seasons they were able to release, maybe all
