It will keep me chewing and keep from having a dry mouth, bad for the gum around the teeth.

"Humans can safely consume xylitol, but it is critical to keep all sugar-free products containing this sweetener—such as gum, peanut butter, and toothpaste—out of reach of pets".

Bottom line here? Xylitol is better for you humans than Sorbitol. It's actually good for you.

Xylitol has been linked to heart attacks and strokes.

Didn't for me at first, then clicked on the qualifying items "shop items" under the price, chose that way and worked.

Article doesn't state how much is too much. Presumably the amount of xylitol in gum is not going to be an issue. Xylitol is good for your teeth. You also assume that maltitol and sorbitol are better for you than xylitol? Sorbitol has been linked to higher coronary risk.
