Cooler nerd here, I've used these types things before the they work fine but anymore we just freeze water bottles they tend to last longer and when they do thaw you have cold water to drink.

You do have a point there. Often these types of things claim to have liquid that stays cold longer than water, but all things being equal it's cheaper to reuse some old plastic bottles and drink the water when they sufficiently melt. That said, after doing a road trip where I was freezing up my bottles overnight in what are usually very thin hotel room freezer spaces, I did buy a set of very thin travel ice for this situation.

fellow cool-ing nerd here --- found out about foam ice bricks (or whatever they're called) when I lived with diabetic college roommate, and he would have a ton of these left over from meds being mailed. How does gel compare? I think gel is slightly worse than the ice bricks?

Asking because the problem with the foam ice bricks is due to the bags they are in. Not sturdy enough and if you don't baby them, the bags rip and then it gets gross (water gets in and bottom of coolers turn brown, because foam is brown.)

SAMPLE ITEM I HAVE PURCHASED:
https://www.amazon.com/Polar-Tech...B009W7YA30

Has lasted at least 3 years of off and on again use, but rips are appearing slowly but surely... Need to replace in a year or two. Plastic water packs are more solid but don't last more than 2 hours.

This 100% is the way! It works great for lunch boxes (single bottle) to medium bag coolers dispersed strategically throughout, to large coolers in combination with ice, ice melt will increase surface contact with beverages and frozen bottles will keep the water colder longer and then yes you can drink once its melted!

I bought some of these a while ago for around $10. Wasn't really impressed. I liked the smaller profile, but they don't stay cold for very long.

For $6 I might give them a 2nd chance.
