These are amazing, a huge upgrade over classic Baofengs. Better settings, better transmit UI, better VFO , usb c charging, and smaller than a Nokia. Awesome radios.

Grabbed one. I know I need a license and will get one.

Planned usage is: vehicle-to-vehicle comms on forest service roads, boat-to-boat comms in kayaks, possible use as emergency marine radio (not required, but always thought it would be useful to have something to hail a larger vessel in an emergency), and general SHTF disaster prep.

I just have to figure out where to start.

edit: once I figure out how I want to use it, and am licensed, I'll likely get an official/legal marine handheld. But $20 seems like an easy entry point.

I have a Baofung radio that I use just to listen. I don't have a license to transmit but If I need help and this is my only means to communicate, I am transmitting. I don't care if you need a license or not lol.

Bought these and they suck. Break easily. Don't waste your money on this brand.

For those of you who are more experienced, what's the difference between this deal and this other link with better reviews? https://a.co/d/0ekrUwXJ

Depends on what bands, modulation and power levels. There are parts of the spectrum you can use without a license (I.e. walkie talkie bands for instance)

FRS band (no license) and GMRS (need license but no test) would be usable though technically the radio isn't certified for the FRS bands.

technically yes you need a license but practically the gray area is pretty darn wide.

I think it would be cool to get these, but I need somebody to tell me if they are legit because I don't know anything about ham radios and all the reviews are from Vine

These are entry level radios. I have friends that have been using them for without any problems for years.

Any insight into whether HAM or GMRS is better for normal civilian use.
