120V systems pull ~double the current of 230/240V systems for the same wattage. Using lower current means less heat generated in the electronics and motor ... which certainly can contribute to fewer failures.

It also makes them cheaper (less copper) which is why you see better prices on the higher voltage systems.

Thanks. Good answer. The one thing I'm hearing is that if you want to power it from solar, a 115 is easier unless you have more expensive inverters. Does that sound right?

Generally yes.

You need a split-phase 120/240V inverter which are more complicated (it's essentially two inverters in one box) and usually meant for higher power situations (partial house, workshop) ... both of which are going to push up the minimum price.

It would be /nice/ if the manual for this listed it's inrush (surge) current and operating current/breaker size.

Is this big enough to support a 20'x20' 2-car garage that has been converted to a 2nd living room? I'll eventually upgrade the entire refrigerated air unit. I work from home, so I need something a bit cheaper and need it fast.

Yes it will work just fine but if you have a double entry door that stays open it will run longer to cool to your thermostat set point.
