For those new to clipless pedals, Crank Brothers will eventually break if you are a regular mountain biker. Spend the extra $ on TIME ATAC pedals if you want long-term durability.

I'm new... what specifically breaks on these and why?

I have never heard that, and have worked in the bike industry since 1997. Is this a new problem since SRAM took over? Or the old problems of 15 years ago? I just switched from Spd to these crankbrothers, loving them, feels like platforms.

I have the mallet on my xc & Enduro bikes for the last couple of years, riding about 30 miles on each every week and they are still going strong.

The spring breaks, but I had 20k miles on mine by the time they broke, and Crank Brothers replaced it.

When did SRAM ever own Crank Brothers? They are owned by Selle Royal since 2008... and I know a lot of people who had failures with Crank Brothers products after that, lots of issues around maybe 2010-2012, somewhere in that area. I don't know that there are any issues in the last decade but it's a manufacturer I avoid based on past experience.

I'm using Look X-Track at the moment and they are awesome, too. Also compatible with Shimano SPD cleats which is a bonus. I have heard of some problems but every pedal had some flaw. I like the Crank Bros pedals and my buddies have had good luck.

Clipping in on any bike is really scary! It takes a little practice and a few mandatory falls but it's worth it IMO.

I have 16k miles on my eggbeaters which have hit many rocks and trees. They still work great!
