What you lose is the backup track that the DJI mic2 and 3 record to the mic itself. This makes sure you have audio recorded even if there is some reason the wireless connection fails. For professionals or people trying to capture something really important that you can't redo, it can be a lifesaver of a feature.
If you just want to improve audio on your short videos, you might be served well enough with the Mic Mini.
Also, Hollyland makes some great wireless mics too, if you are exploring your options.

The upgrades on the 3s aren't enough of a reason for me to upgrade for my needs but damn am I tempted.

The DJI Mic Mini launched in November 2024 with an MSRP of $169 for the full kit, which includes two transmitters, one receiver, and a charging case. It features adaptive gain control but does not support 32-bit floating-point recording, unlike the DJI Mic 2 and Mic 3. Now you can buy that kit for $79. So, if you don't need the pro level features, pay less for the Mic Mini and you're probably still going to be happy.
There are also slight audio quality differences. Check YouTube for demos of that to see if that will matter to you.
