This looks like a good game. Looking more for the $20 price point on it though.

For $30, it's worth it at this price.

Is this something to try if I've never known dragon quest beforehand?

It is a turn based monster collector, best comparable to Pokemon and such. You tame monsters, make a party of them, and then go fight through the plot. Theres stuff like fusing monsters together, and the world is more open and traversable (I would look up videos if you want to see how it performs on the Switch). DQ mainline games are usually the same JRPG without the monster taming involved. The games usually only make small jokes and references about other games, so you don't need to know anything from prior games to follow the plot. Of course, just be ready for grinding and possible tedious battling. This game has been hitting 30$ every so often, same with Dragon Quest Treasures, which is a more real time battle monster collector.

I loved the original three from the Gameboy color days. I actually liked them more than pokemon. I also liked the Joker pair on the DS. I put maybe 15 hours on this game and got side tracked with Unicorn Overlord and Balders Gate 3. I'll get back to it once I get more time. The fun comes from breeding/mixing monsters to make stronger ones.

I'd recommend you go with Dragon Quest 11 instead, if you want an idea of the mainline series. This game here is part of a spin off series.

How similar to Pokemon is this?

My wife loves Pokemon, she also played Dragon Quest 11 and loved that as well.

I'd say no.

It's a pokemon-like with emphasis on breeding to make new monsters.

Personally I think the knowledge of these characters is part of the appeal. Without it the game would fall flat.

Like the poster above I highly recommend Dragon Quest XI. It's incredibly fun, the story requires no previous knowledge and is more traditional gameplay.

You capture monsters in this game similar to pokemon. Its breeding system is what would make it different for her.
Sounds like she's the perfect candidate for this…Valentines gift!

Fun game, but I'd recommend the Steam version if you can find it on sale. This runs pretty bad on Switch...it's mostly in the high 20s for FPS and low resolution.

All of this! Those gameboy color days. It was so addicting breeding, you could even steal monsters. I'm going to have to pick this up but the backlog is getting a bit crazy.

Maybe 10 years ago, I replayed part 1. Three years ago, I replayed it again along with part 2 Tara. I forgot how short the game is as you can beat it in a weekend trying to make top tier monsters.

That's awesome! Almost like a speedrun. Great games! I went to see my progress on the second one a few months ago but the battery died inside the game. I know how to replace them know but the save files gone.
