The whole point of these small little lightweight batteries is that they put out the same amount of power as a big cumbersome 5ah battery in compact little package. But yeah, the runtime, if that is an issue for you, will be a third less - but that's easily overcome by swapping in a freshly charged battery.

Wouldn't this void the warranty [dewalt.com]? I'm not sure these sellers are authorized by DeWalt.

While I've purchased my Dewalt batteries from Dewalt authorized sellers, the two times I've had battery issues, I don't recall them asking me where I purchased them. They wanted the codes from the battery itself and then shipped me a new battery.

They didn't ask you when and subsequently where you bought them and didn't require proof? That seems suspect.

I've been into service centers with my tools that needed repair and have never once been asked where I bought it or how long ago I bought it. As long as it looks in decent shape and I haven't abused it they have always simply taken care of it without question.

That's interesting. But don't you have to initiate the warranty service online first and provide purchase date, etc?

Same, they've never asked me where I purchased the batteries.

As long as it was under warranty (based on the battery serial number) they didn't care.

I'm sure if there was a question about that, I would have to email additional info.

I just called their customer service line and mentioned the defective battery. They were really quick a out shipping a replacement.

One of the standout things about the normal dewalt 20V battery packs is that they don't have a built in battery management system. They're literally just a pack of either 18650 or 21700 cells with wires attached. So no weird parasitic drain that kills the pack if you store it for too long, and no mysterious IC that decides to brick the entire pack because you breathed on it wrong. I don't know whether or not these newer pouch cell batteries have a BMS.

Which is also why you should be careful using DeWalt batteries with adapters in other brands of tools, for without that BMS, they can be discharged too low for recharging.
