I think the key is to not overheat the bits, which will dull the tip and render it useless. I find that gradually stepping up from a smaller bit actually shorten the drilling time and saving the bits. Titanium bits worked well for me so these should work. This is based off of my limited experience when building my metal carport.

need a drill bit to drill my metal studs. which one is good? i tried some bits that i have and they kept spinning. couldnt punch any hole through them

Use TEK screws.... or if you need a specific hole for whatever, any of the drill bits here will work.

I may not need to say it, but make sure the bit is rotating clockwise and not running in reverse.... even a dull bit should punch through the box store thin metal studs. A good slap on an ice pick will even do it.

I have 2 aluminum( I think aluminum) valve cover bolts that I over torqued and ended up breaking off...are these what I could use to drill a hole in them? Or do I need a different type of drill bits?

I don't have personal experience with this, but I believe it can work. I would just make sure that I don't push through too fast in order to not heat and warp the aluminum. Definitely lubricate well. Some of the car guys on YouTube have created videos on this subject. I would look into something that drills in the opposite direction so that I might have a chance at still removing the bolt while drilling it out.

also, if you can weld and the bolt is flush, you can weld (maybe jb weld) on a washer and nut to the bolt to screw it out.

If the heads of the bolts are broken off, it maybe easier to remove the valve cover and see how much of the bolt is pending protruding out.

If there is enough, you can put some vice grips and turn it out. If it broke flush with the block, you can use a bit to drill a small hole in which you can then use an extractor bit. Before you start drilling, I highly recommend using a center punch to make sure your bit isn't traveling around and scoring the threads on the block. If you do that then you'll have to do the extra work of rethreading.

This video is an example of what I'm talking about assuming this is your scenario. The guy in the video doesn't use a center punch because he maybe more experienced which I think you should if you've never done anything like this.

The best way to remove a broken bolt is to use a left hand drill bit. The left hand drill bit will drill in the direction the threads go to remove the bolt as well as heat it up so most of the time the bit will eventually grab whats left of the bolt and unscrew it. I hope that makes sense.

I've used small nails to create a pilot hole, this gives any bit a starting point and something to grab onto. Don't need much.
