Weed fabric always fails after a couple years and it's a huge pain to remove. It also doesn't work well. You just need mulch and regular weeding, and your weed problems will get better. There's no shortcut unfortunately.

Using woven polypropylene (PP) weed barrier landscape fabric is generally not a good idea for traditional flower or vegetable garden beds, though it can work well under hardscapes like gravel, rock paths, or driveways.

Why it is a bad idea -
• Weeds still grow: Wind-blown seeds land on top of decomposing mulch or dust that accumulates on the fabric and root right into the mesh, making them harder to pull.
• Soil health declines: It restricts air exchange and water infiltration, harms beneficial soil organisms like earthworms, and prevents organic matter from enriching the soil.
• Plant root suffocation: It traps carbon dioxide and blocks natural moisture flow, which can cause root stress or rot during heavy rains or droughts.
• Difficult removal: Perennial roots grow through the weave, and the plastic degrades over 3 to 10 years into microplastics that are nearly impossible to clean up.

When it is a good idea -
• Under hardscapes: It works well beneath gravel pathways, cobble, or decorative rock to stabilize the ground and keep stones from sinking into the dirt.
• Commercial or high-traffic utility zones: It can serve as a temporary separator in unplanted pathways or long-season crop rows (like broccoli or cabbage) where soil life is not the primary concern.

Better alternatives for Garden Beds -
• Thick organic mulch: Apply a 3 to 6 inch layer of wood chips, shredded leaves, or straw to suppress weeds naturally while feeding the soil.
• Cardboard or builders paper: Layer heavy-duty cardboard or brown builder's paper under mulch as a temporary, biodegradable weed suppressor that breaks down safely in about a year.

Disagree. Put on a thick screen down after weeding the front of my house and then used rocks instead of mulch to finish it off. Have not had weeds grow there much after nearly a decade. Screen is holding up. And for spots where weeds might pop up they're easy to spot and weed or spray.
