I should have got a new laptop last year. I have seen that the laptop that I would like is about $300 more than last year for a model with the same specs. For the price that I want, the laptop has a smaller SSD and/or RAM, but it is not worth doing the upgrade path as I did with my last few laptops. Plus, some of the newer laptops are not upgradeable.
Looking to buy a new laptop, what kind of RAM type and SSD type should I be looking for? Non-gaming purpose but still want to avoid old tech/ TIA
You want at least 16GB of RAM. And I would get a 780m GPU CPU... that is a CPU that has the 780M GPU built into it. There are about six chips... ask AI but two of them are the Ryzen 7 8845HS and the H255 Chip that is made for China... and others and I would say a 512GB HD would do it for you... but I like 1TB. So that is a typical system... Ryzen 7 H255, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB (you want Gen 4... but if they don't say, expect Gen 3) and the RAM you would want is DDR5600 SODIMM (the SO mean laptop memory). I would also look for a refurbished deal.
Or perhaps the Snapdragon X or X plus CPU would suite you. It has some software incompatibility issues, but I don't see you installing anything special that you would have to worry such as games or major software.
Either machine I can find on ebay for $450ish... so to me that is the price to get something current and it is still DIRT CHEAP for what you get. It may be second hand or refurbished, I just want a machine that works perfectly.

So this CPU is almost six years old... at this age, I expect 75% off. The RAM is old tech, the hard drive is old tech.
Honestly, if I don't need to do much (web browsing, etc.), I'd rather stick with an older, and preferably a more repairable, laptop. Microsoft is supposedly trying to bring back Recall, which only works on Copilot+ PCs. Hold onto your old laptops where Microsoft can't force "features" that violate privacy.

preferably more repairable? Most laptops at this age have soldiered RAM (usually never breaks) and hard drives that are replaceable... but for sure, they used the cheapest hard drives they can find when it was build. If you are worried about privacy.... that is a tough one... VPN, Linux and no google, apple or microsoft or facebook or any social media... encryption and make sure you don't have any apps starting up when you turn on your laptop.
This model launched in January 2021. Not sure I'd spend this much on a five year old laptop. Looks like seller pays return shipping and 1 year Allstate warranty is included though.
