Metal is connected to ground internally so a live voltage/short will generally trip the breaker. Even better if it's plugged into a gfci outlet.
The actual reason is it's stronger and doesn't catch on fire. (Plastic still provides some fuel even though it shouldn't propagate with proper ul0 listing)
So a partial short in a plastic unit can generate heat and melt, while this one is more likely to trip the breaker, and even when not won't melt.
Personally I don't care much about metal but I do like that this unit because it's basic strip with no usb plug (which are oftentimes what actually fails) and an actual rating.
Personally I don't buy strips with usb outlets. Mixing high and low voltage in same body can be a risk.
