Know the difference between turmeric and curcumin. Curcumin is one of the active compounds found in turmeric, and it is what you want to look for when you're seeking the specific benefits associated with curcumin.

Naturally, turmeric powder typically contains only around 3% curcuminoids. That's a relatively small amount, and simply consuming large quantities of turmeric powder isn't necessarily an efficient way to obtain a concentrated dose. Absorption is another issue because curcumin has relatively poor bioavailability when consumed by itself.

This particular capsule contains less than 10% curcumin—approximately 50 mg out of 500 mg—and it contains no piperine (black-pepper extract), which is commonly added to increase curcumin absorption.

If you're specifically looking for a curcumin supplement, look for one that clearly states the amount and concentration of curcuminoids rather than simply saying "turmeric." Many products use extracts standardized to around 95% curcuminoids, sometimes with piperine or another ingredient intended to improve absorption. These products are obviously more expensive.

For inexpensive turmeric powder for cooking, however, you can often find good options at ethnic grocery stores, particularly South Asian stores. Don't confuse inexpensive culinary turmeric with a concentrated curcumin extract—they serve different purposes.

I made a more detailed post about turmeric and curcumin several months ago. Look for my previous post if you want the full explanation.
