Oil is only necessary if a company wants to make a greater profit by using less almonds in their almond butter. Kind of gross. I make almond butter by throwing nuts in the Cuisinart, turning it on and waiting until it's smooth. Just almonds.

That is incorrect. I make almond butter at home as well, but for commercial products oil is added to almond butter primarily to prevent natural separation and to maintain a smooth, spreadable texture straight out of the jar.

we have the Spread the Love brand almond butter in packets at work. no other ingredient listed but almonds. it's horrid tasting. nobody takes them for a reason.

Their palm fruit oil comes from fields exclusively for their use. It's RSPO-Mixed and quite sustainable. Also, the palm fruit isn't heavily saturated (that's palm kernel).
