I bought this the last time around and it's great, except they neutered it so it doesn't do much unless you have a subscription. The latest update pings home to see if it has a membership before even letting you use the hardware.

No, a subscription is not strictly required to pedal and use the bike, but the built-in 10" screen has significantly restricted features if you don't pay for an Echelon Premier membership ($34–$39.99/month).
What Works Without a Subscription

If you cancel after the included trial period, you can still use the bike in "Freestyle Mode":
  • Manual Resistance: The 32 magnetic resistance levels work normally via the control knob.
  • Live Metrics: The 10" screen displays your real-time workout stats: cadence (RPM), current resistance level, power output (watts), distance, and heart rate (if paired with a monitor).
What You Lose Without a Subscription
  • Classes & Community: No access to live or on-demand instructor-led classes, scenic rides, or leaderboards.
  • History Tracking: Your post-workout data and historical ride statistics will not be saved in your account.
Key Things to Know About the 10" Screen
  1. It's a Locked System: The built-in screen runs a customized, locked version of Android made specifically for Echelon. Out of the box, you cannot open a web browser, watch Netflix/YouTube, or run the Peloton app directly on that screen without sideloading third-party software.
  2. Third-Party App Workaround (QZ App): A popular workaround among Echelon owners is using a low-cost third-party app called QZ (QDomyoS-Zwift). It connects to the bike's Bluetooth to read metrics and auto-adjust resistance while letting you follow along with Zwift, Peloton, or Apple Fitness+ on a phone or TV.

Get a used Peloton, hack it with OpenPelo and you can stream with metrics. Works pretty well if you don't care about streaks. You can even sideload the Peloton app and pay $29 a month if you really want the cycling and strength/cardio/etc. classes.

I used to pay $50 a month for All-Access, but have now just canceled it and you can watch pretty much anything streaming app, including Youtube for spin classes.

This looks like the one I have. I've used it fairly often for 3 years and it still holds up well. I probably get 1-2 hours on it each week.

I've never paid for any subscriptions/classes and just used it to track watts, time, etc. Another commenter mentioned that the latest software update is more restrictive, but I've purposely never updated the software while I've had it.

Whats the solution to be able to use the screen to simply watch youtube and other video streaming?

Someone was giving one away on the side of the road. Even the bike thieves dont want it. Let me know if you want me to grab it for you.
