Kirk attempts to steal the U.S.S. Enterprise and defy Starfleet's Genesis planet quarantine to search for his friend, but the Klingons are planning a deadline rendezvous.

It only makes sense if you think that for 150 years, Vulcans kept their death practices a secret - at the cost of leaving people behind during the Klingon wars, and Sarek thought Kirk could be trusted.
