Just note, Roku released several updates recently that have increased ads, added sound to ads, reduced customization of home, broken live tv pause, decreased reception of ota channels, and made it so OTA channels don't work without internet. I've loved the roku platform- till this month. Now its a monitor, not a tv.

A monitor- with ads! Roku's still the best budget Smart TV OS platform, unfortunately. You only have a handful of other options:

🤢Google TV - The worst: Monitors and reports everything you watch back to their motherships and corroborates everything between your phone, computer, and other logins across accounts. Google will even use your data to figure out who else is in your family and conveniently "add" them as login options.
🤢Apple tvOS - Like Google but without ACR. Apple uses a hard-walled privacy model to purposely lock out other data brokers so they can keep your sweet, sweet data for themselves. They want to be your data dom.
🤢Tizen (Samsung) - Similar to Google; Samsung tracks every pixel crossing the screen through your HDMI cords (video games, cable boxes, etc.) using ACR, but the OS is super fast. That said, the TVs themselves are more expensive.
🤢LG - The worst: Stalks you and mercilessly pounds you with ads whether you like it or not. Company recently censured by Microsoft after installing adware from its monitors onto PCs without disclosure or consent of the owner (you can't make this stuff up). Remember, LG is NOT "Life's Good," it's "Lucky Goldstar," which comes from two separate Korean companies that merged, Lucky Chemical Industrial Corp. and GoldStar Co. You know: Those super ethical industrial chemical companies. I'm sure they're not doing anything suspicious with your data.

Or you can be an absolute nut like me and turn off all Smart functionality and connect your PC to your television, making it a monitor, and layering additional complexity into your life in a futile attempt to fight the tide of omnipresent monitoring. Even then, my Samsung QN90D will still ask me to log in with my Google account almost daily, despite having disabled every internet function I could find.
