Great deal if you have DDR four laying around
Just built one and used up all my ddr4 or I would do another. Cheap build and good for beginning 1080p gaming.

You will need a GPU as this cpu has no integrated graphics

Before anyone asks, no, no ai is used in my posts, just good old fashioned human autism.

This is the cheapest a combo of the r5 5500 paired with an even semi-decent motherboard has ever been to my knowledge (excluding price mistakes), though obviously the ongoing ram and ssd apocalypse will increase the cost of a build for anyone who doesn't already have ddr4. Still, even if you spend over $100 on a 16gb kit of ddr4, this combo will still be cheaper than the current frontpage combos for the r5 5500 that have a worse motherboard than the one in this deal (ex. https://slickdeals.net/f/19849521-amd-ryzen-5-5500-asus-prime-b550m-a-ac-geil-orion-rgb-16gb-2-x-8gb-cpu-cooler-230-99 ).

The r5 5500 is essentially an r5 5600g with the integrated graphics removed, it has 6 cores and 12 threads. While it still utilizes the zen 3 architecture (two generations old) and is on the last generation am4 socket, there are a couple additional downsides compared to standard zen 3 cpus. Most notably, compared to the r5 5600 it has half as much L3 cache (16mb instead of 32mb), and only supports pcie gen3 rather than gen4. This shouldn't make too major of a difference for a budget build, it mainly affects gaming and certain storage intensive productivity application performance, but it's still worth noting. This cpu does not have integrated graphics, you will need a discrete graphics card for display output. Certain gpus, particularly low end modern gpus like the rtx 5060ti and below, use a pcie x8 interface instead of x16, and will perform notably worse with pcie gen3. Specifically avoid the rx 6500xt, which has a pcie x4 interface. The 5500 comes with a wraith stealth cpu cooler included, while it'll do in a pinch I'd recommend using the rosewill cooler that is part of this combo instead of the wraith cooler instead unless your case lacks the clearance for it.

Motherboard specs: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherbo...X-WIFI6/sp
As far as I can tell, the feature set of this board seems decent for the price, and certainly should be more than sufficient for any standard budget build. I wouldn't recommend trying to upgrade to a 12+ core cpu on this board, but realistically speaking at this point upgrading on am4 doesn't make much sense. It uses the b550 chipset, which is the midrange option of the most modern chipset generation for the am4 socket. Keep in mind that with the r5 5500 cpu you will not be able to utilize pcie gen4, even though this board supports it. As a last gen am4 socket board there is no upgrade path for future gen cpus. In the past I would've recommended even budget buyers try to get a low end am5 build, since the price premium was generally more than worth it, but with the current ram/ssd apocalypse am5 builds are much less viable at the low end currently.

The rosewill cpu cooler included as a "free gift item" looks to be a run of the mill single tower cooler, with a (in my opinion pointless) gimmick of a digital display. I expect cooling performance to be a noticeable step over the included wraith stealth cooler, but likely not terribly competitive against other standard tower coolers. I'd personally recommend against installing rosewill's software, or using the digital display at all for that matter. Make sure your case has clearance for the cooler before installing it, it has a height of 158 mm.

Since the combo savings apply even with only the cpu and motherboard you aren't locked into any particular ram to get the discount, but I figured I'd share a couple options that stood out for those who need ram to go along with this combo.
If you're willing to purchase from a third party seller shipped by newegg, the colorful official store (colorful is a smaller player in the ram space, with more market share in asia from what I recall) has 16gb (2x8gb) DDR4 3200 CL16-20-20-40 1.35v for $93, bringing the total of the combo to $183.98: https://www.newegg.com/colorful-b...70BKYB0754
If you'd prefer faster ram both sold and shipped by newegg, I'd recommend teamgroup T-FORCE VULCAN Z 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3600 CL18-22-22-42 1.35v for $110 (after $40 promo code is applied), bringing the total of the combo to $200.98: https://www.newegg.com/team-group...6820331542
If rgb/aesthetics are more important to you than performance, I'd recommend teamgroup T-Force Delta RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3200 CL16-20-20-40 1.35v for $120 (after $45 combo savings when added to cart alongside the cpu and motherboard), bringing the total of the combo to $210.99: https://www.newegg.com/team-group...6820331858

While the ram and storage apocalypse has definitely put a damper on pc building, this combo is by far the best value there's been for a budget pc build in the past couple of months.

Regarding those other components needed for a build, this combo is like getting a cheap engine & transmission with no body, chassis or wheels! You know. The expensive parts!
