Here's why they still exist:
They're much cheaper. A modified sine wave inverter is simpler to build, so manufacturers can sell a 300–1000 W inverter for significantly less than a comparable pure sine wave model.
Many loads don't care. Incandescent lights, resistive heaters, soldering irons, and many older power supplies work just fine on MSW.
Some electronics convert AC to DC immediately. Many inexpensive chargers and power bricks will still operate, although they may run warmer or less efficiently.
The downsides are what make many people recommend pure sine wave today:
Motors (fans, refrigerators, power tools) can run hotter, noisier, and less efficiently.
Audio equipment often picks up an audible buzz.
Microwave ovens usually produce less cooking power.
Some battery chargers, CPAP machines, laser printers, and sensitive electronics may refuse to work or can be stressed over time.
