I remember when REI caught the insane mind virus and talked about "haters" on their home page (no exaggeration) as they shoved propaganda down everyone's throat.
One of my favorite stores went from a primary source to one of last resort.... I rarely even think of them now and extremely rarely buy anything there.
They also stopped giving out paper bags and you're expected to either carry your purchases out in your hands (regardless of amount) or if you're lucky they'll have a discarded box they can let you have. People walk out dropping stuff as they try to open the door...

It's been a weird 10+ years for REI. I think the C-suite roles must have been captured by burn-it-down-after capitalists, cause they've spent millions fighting against workers rights, "accidentally" signing a letter in support of a cabinet pick whose entire objective is to sell off public lands and open protected areas to oil and mining, etc. Just seems like they're wearing the dead and fetid hide of a pro-public company at this point.
Meh. Any customer owned business that gets successful goes through a period like this, where they go from being very good at solving a problem to trying to solve all the world's problems and end up no longer solving anything. They'll find their way again.
