Unless you absolutely have to have a single unit, separate units are a much better idea in case anything breaks.

Was thinking that as I hear these combo units are a pain for both install/delivery and when a likely issue occurs.

Can't even get to the emergency release on my stacking washer/dryer without lifting the dryer off. And best of luck finding a replacement that will fit the mounting brackets and location on the unit you're keeping when the other fails. Which means you're practically doubling your chances of having to replace the set by buying a stacking unit.
