The real selling point of the Craftsman system is the fairly easy to find and inexpensive battery replacement. My first battery mower was a 40V Kubota and for the replacement costs of those batteries you could nearly buy a brand new mower, however I must say that the Kubota blower far outperforms any of the Craftsman blowers and I will be sad to see the day when my last 40V battery dies for that reason alone.
FWIW, my next mower will be a robot. I am retiring and want to do some traveling without worrying about my HOA.
Thats not how it works always. If it utilized 40v, it would claim 40 volts. Its using the 20v batteries in parallel, to boost the run time. If it was in series, it would boost the voltage.
"I only have 20v batteries, not 40v batteries, I can't buy this, I need a 20v mower".
This is why craftsman and Dewalt and a lot of others market their two-battery 40v hardware as "2x20v". It helps a lot with customer understanding.
A mower needs a 40v (really, 36v— again, a marketing decision) or it just will not keep up with traditional mowing needs.
Another thing to consider; If these were linking two batteries for runtime, you'd be able to shove a DIY jumper into the second slot and get half the runtime, but you can't.
I own this mower and it's fine. I have a somewhat large yard that takes about an hour to mow, I just already own a lot of craftsman batteries so I can run two sets of packs and keep going. 5AH is a solid 45 minutes of mowing time for me.
