But I actually don't have any unread messages. This started a month or so ago. Is it a bug?

Recently, there was a bug where if someone on your ignore list PMd you, you would essentially see a "ghost" notification. I think this should be fixed now, but you may want to check your ignore list to see if that could be the issue: https://slickdeals.net/forums/profile.php?do=ignorelist
If you have "slickalerts" on your ignore list, I'd start there Smilie
