From what I've learned, the effectiveness depends largely on the device's power output, the distance from your skin, and the length of each session. Most inexpensive devices don't even list their actual power (in watts), and they're usually on the weaker side. The more powerful units—around 120 watts or higher—tend to be much more expensive.
My understanding is that with lower-powered devices (around 65 watts or less), you generally need to place them directly against, or very close to, your skin and use them for about 10 minutes or more to deliver a meaningful amount of light. The lower the power, the closer and longer you'll typically need to use the device.
The promotional photos showing these panels sitting several feet away on a stand can be misleading. At that distance, many lower-powered units likely deliver much less light than people expect, so longer treatment times may be necessary.
Personally, I'd rather buy a basic device for around $40, like the one I ordered from Amazon, and use it as close to my skin as possible for 30 minutes or longer. If you can afford one of the higher-powered models, you can usually use it from a greater distance and for shorter sessions.
I also don't see much value in buying expensive knee wraps or other body-part-specific accessories. A good panel—or one of these newer multi-purpose devices—can be used on different areas of your body, making it a more versatile option.
