I used a homemade model of one of these in physical therapy. It's surprisingly difficult. I made my own with a piece of PVC pipe and rope and used a 3lb wt.

Back in the stone ages 55 years ago, our coaches cut a broomstick, drove a nail into it, got some light rope and hung a 5 pound weight on it. If you're wanting to save some money.

The foam handles on this just slipped for me, so I removed them and now it works just fine, no slipping. Only issue is that it is sort of a small grip (as in your hands are very nearly a closed fist wrapping around the skinny handles).

The problem with this design, is when you go heavy enough, it's a bigger strain on your shoulders than your forearms. These things really need to be mounted to something to train heavy.

I rest my wrists on something solid (Olympic bar with towel) for heavier weights

I just do wrist curls. I snagged that 200lbs of weight recently and there is only 4 5lb so almost got this. You won't be able to target one side at a time. I find 7.5lbs the average for the left with tiny increments doing reverse. But do 15lb the other (starting out). Also like the wrist support a bench provides on heavier lifts like 50lbs per arm. Using the cables it's unsteady. Plus single hand allows me for better angle which the wrist are picky about that.
