Anything much over a merv8 is really restricting airflow, especially on a 1in filter. 2in and thicker filters provide more surface area which can help to mitigate restricted airflow from hvac filters. Realistically though, you don't need higher than merv8. Try not to rely on your hvac to be an air filter for your home. It's not meant to do that. The filters on your hvac are really meant to just keep your coils/fins clear of debris and dust so heat energy can more readily be taken from the air inside to be expelled outside as it passes through over the fins.
Clean air in the home should be accomplished through other means, like buying a separate hepa filtration unit and keep in the main room(s). The bedroom in particular. While that may seem expensive to do, depending on what you get, you will actually have better air filtration this way and your hvac blowers will likely last longer and your home cooling more efficiently. Those savings in equipment cost and electricity, and better cooling, end up being more than the cost of the hepa filter or two in main room(s) over the life span of the hvac system.

I buy these MERV13 filters for the custom air purifiers I make for my home using 140mm PC fans. I agree that a higher MERV rating in your HVAC is causing it to work really hard
