This is a daypack, so expect that 18L pack size to be noticeably smaller than a school backpack. However, there is no lighter or more comfortable way to carry 2.5L of water with you! Unlike a thick plastic Nalgene or especially a metal dual-walled Stanley "bottle," the CamelBak is a thin canteen that flexes with your body shape and movement, plus the drinking tube keeps your hands free without spilling a drop. Cleaning is kind of a chore, but it's worth it to be able to get out and freely explore for hours and hours.
I bought two cheaper store brand backpacks with 1.5L bladders and tubes, and they worked alright during a weeklong trip to Utah during some blazing 90°F and even 104°F max temp weather. We filled them 1/4 with ice and topped off with water from our hotel each morning 6:30-7am; surprisingly the water stayed (blessedly!) cool all day (sometimes the first gulp of water that had stayed in the tube warmed up) and really encouraged us to hydrate often, usually lasting us until 2-3pm where we wanted to be done in the sun anyway. We also carried granola/trail mix, a sandwich, bandana, sunscreen, a slim battery bank in a sandwich bag (in case of liquid), and thankfully also a travel towel. Clipping bike helmets to the outside, you can't carry much more in these. I forget if it was the first or second day, but the cheap bladders started leaking. We wrapped the tubes in plumber's/teflon tape, but one was so gone I picked up a 2L CamelBak bladder as a replacement. The jump in quality was amazing, with better tube attachment, softer but more durable reservoir, and better drinking flow rate from the tube. Whereas the cheap ones started showing issues in the first 8 hours, I feel the upgraded bladder will last for years (we've had no issues yet, 2 summers later, ready for our third).
I think the 2.5L capacity here would be a bit better for hydration peace of mind, ideally I don't want to carry an additional water bottle at all.
