If using a terramaster NAS you can use this as expansion with RAID capabilities I tihnk. Otherwise its JBOD for the most part but still very good and fast like that as well.

Most recommend software RAID for home servers/labs these days. It's worth the additional CPU overhead to know that you don't need any special hardware to get to your data. Otherwise, a problem with your RAID controller likely means you need to find compatible hardware to access the array.

I have 2 different TrueNAS systems at my house, with one being exclusively for backing up the primary. The backup system is using 5 drives in a TerraMaster DAS, and it has them combined using raidz (RAID5). My primary system has the drives directly connected to the motherboard and is using raidz2 (RAID6). Neither system is using hardware RAID. I could connect the drives to any system running TrueNAS and my data would be accessible. In fact, I think that I could install ZFS on most any Linux Distro and get to the data.

EDIT: I'm not trying to argue that hardware RAID is bad. But I am saying that software RAID is a viable option.
