Expert Q&A Sessions, Vacuums, Part 2: When is refurb genuinely the smart play, and when are you better off waiting for a new-model price drop?

Question: Refurbished. Dyson, iRobot, and Shark all run direct refurb programs. When is refurb genuinely the smart play, and when are you better off waiting for a new-model price drop?

Iconian: I've owned a few refurbished vacuums over the years, including Dyson and Xiaomi models — probably around four units total. For me, buying refurbished generally makes sense if the price difference is large enough compared to new.

A lot of the time, the savings can be around 25-30% or more, and at that point I think it's worth considering. I'm usually not too worried about the quality aspect because many refurbished units are sold directly by the manufacturer or an authorized refurbisher and still include a warranty.

In my experience, if there's going to be an issue with a vacuum, it usually shows up fairly early, like a bad battery or some other hardware problem. If that happens, it just becomes a warranty claim.

Question: Where do you stand on buying last year's models at a big discount vs the current model at a slightly higher price point? Are the advancements between models very noticeable in vacuums or is it mostly marketing buzzwords without noticeable real world differences?

Iconian: I think that's a good question, and for me it mostly comes down to identifying which features actually matter to you.

Looking at how robot vacuums have evolved over the last three or four years, most of the improvements seem to fall into three main categories: stronger suction power, better AI and object avoidance systems, and improved LIDAR navigation. There's also additional convenience features like stair detection, advanced docking systems, mopping, self emptying, and even hot water.

Once I look at those categories, I can usually narrow down what actually matters for my own use case. For example, I don't have in my home, and LIDAR navigation has already been good enough for several years now. So for me, the larger considerations are things like suction performance, runtime, mapping flexibility, and how well it handles specific cleaning situations, such as no go zones.

Because of that, I'd personally lean toward buying a previous-generation model rather than the newest release. You can often save 20–30%, and instead of buying a brand-new mid-tier model, you can usually afford a higher-end model from the prior generation.

In many cases, that higher-end older model still performs at the same level — or sometimes better — than a current mid-range option, while costing about the same. Often times higher end previous generation model will have features that current mid tier models do not have, so this is where doing your own research and identifying your needs is paramount.

Once you figure out the features you actually need and the budget you're comfortable with, the decision usually becomes much easier.

Question: Are there certain times of the year when vacuums tend to have the best discounts?

Iconian: Yes, typically you'll see the best discounts happen during Prime Day, Black Friday, and then a few additional clearance periods throughout the year when retailers are trying to move out older inventory before newer models arrive.
Because of that, those are usually the times I pay the most attention to pricing. If you already know which model you want, it's worth keeping an eye on those sale windows and setting up alerts ahead of time.
